I’m painfully slow, but this painting took f-o-r-e-v-e-r. Due to its scale I used a pin to paint quite a bit of the background (St. Basil’s Cathedral - a building I’ve always had a crush on). Partially inspired by ‘From Russia with Love‘ and instant film it seems pretty cool that 1963 was significant in the history of both… (according to my… um… ‘research department’, anyway).

I’ve always wanted to give an Art Nouveau painting a try… so… um… here’s a first attempt.
The Czech is a nod to Alphonse Mucha (among other reasons), who was, of course, the man.

It takes Photoshop about a second to render an image like this. It takes me about a month to paint one. Seven hundred eighty 5/8″ squares (including ‘edges’ not visible here). *hint* Step away from your monitor (or remove your glasses if you wear them) and the image blurs/merges into somewhat more recognizable shapes.
My inspiration here was the idea ‘memories/thoughts’ of/about events, time, place, etc. are often built-up in a second hand way… through photography, film, other media… blah blah blah. Anyway, apologies to Chuck Close fans. Believe it or not, I did not intend to completely rip off the master when I started this project. The guy is an absolute beast… I have no idea how he does it… ridiculously impressive.
Random question time! If you could have a conversation with any US president, who would you choose? I think I’d have to go with Lincoln (my first Lincoln piece here).

Here’s a crow… thing. You’re probably thinking, “this looks nothing like Brandon Lee”. Admittedly, the likeness isn’t quite there. This crow looks more like his cousin. Don. The used car salesman from upstate. Nice guy, Don. He can get you a sweet deal on a gently used Buick.

Come, Dick. Come, Jane. Come, come. Come and see. Come and see this weird*** painting (then duck and cover like you really mean it)! Yeah, so clearly my painting draftsmanship could use a little work, but… well… I’m on it. Give me another 30 or so years and these suckers might even pass as… passable! Now where did I leave my haz-mat suit and geiger counter again?! Oh… and I think we’re out of T.P., too (that’s just great)!
