Weekly Photo Challenge: One

This weekend I constructed a makeshift softbox of sorts. How exciting, right?! Anyway, 1 cardboard box + white tissue paper + lots and lots of masking tape = some sweet, sweet diffused lighting. Ah, the fun you can have (and just in time for this weeks WordPress Photo Challenge, ‘One’). Does anyone else have a U2 song stuck in their head? You know, something completely incompatible with this image? Maybe it’s just me.

U2 – One

  1. LOL… I don’t know about a U2 song, the first thing that came to my mind was the old classic horror movie “Driller Killer”, but then I guess that explains more about me than people really need to know… 😉
Real cool softbox shot though.. They sure are great to mess with, and I made one too a year or so back, but unfortunately the cardboard / tissue paper construction proved to be less than durable…

    • I’ve never seen “Driller Killer”, but there’s a scene in the movie “Pi” that comes to mind!
Thank you very much, FS – yeah, my softbox is beyond fragile, too (some day I need to use that drill to build myself a nice wood frame – then I could use some eye hooks at the top to ‘suspend’ objects, too…”

  2. I have to make one of these light boxes. Nat (of Book Line & Sinker fame) did a post a while back on how to build one easily. I will have to go consult and get cracking. Once the laundry is caught up, and the dishes, and I get some recipes done, and respond to an inbox of email, and comments, and … YEP.

    LOVE your pic!!

    • They are a lot of fun! Although, if you have the time, I’d suggest building a wood frame. The cardboard box thing is pretty flimsy. Maybe you could salvage some material from your old deck?
I hear you, Dishy… to-do lists only seem to get longer, don’t they?! 🙂

  3. Interesting that you have a drill photo. It was only on Friday we were at my Father-in-law’s & he had an old hand drill & I was thinking how you rarely see them anymore. Sometimes the old ways are just better…

    • This one is a hand drill that belonged to my grandfather (from the photo below). I’ve been meaning to photograph it for a while now, and the softbox was a perfect excuse!

  4. Nice. I built a light box a couple of months ago and have hardly used it…I am thinking now would be a good time to ‘fiddle’ with it some. Stay tuned. 😉

  5. so nifty! i made one of those boxes myself a while back. sadly, my hubby put his foot through the tissue paper side and it’s now been relegated to the basement until i repair it. love that pic–is it a hand drill? (my tool knowledge is sketchy at best.)

    • It’s only a matter of time before mine’s headed for the shop, too – I wish it was a bit more durable.

It is indeed a hand drill. From what I’ve been told. I’m kinda’ in the same boat, Nat! 🙂

  6. I’m late for the party, but I’m here!! Unless you’re a photographer, no one would have a clue as to how difficult it is to achieve this kind of shot!! Fabulous!!
