I was a bit surprised how many people correctly guessed ‘grain bin’ in Friday’s cryptic post! I mean, Laura nailed it in the very first comment, and Lenore was quick to follow! As were Juana and Robert (although I suspect they had a little help from Google – cheeky monkeys)! 😉 Many more folks were on the right track, too… good work, everyone! I’m impressed!
This challenge is now officially in the can… or the bin (so to speak).
About this image: digital photograph, highly modified to imitate an ambrotype
Well they use grain to make beer to put in kegs so I was kinda close…
A runner up prize maybe???
I’d say you were definitely close enough for an honorable mention!
Great work, Tony… now I’m off to check the keg, er bin!
🙂
I love that this photo has a lot of energy and yet somehow is also dreamy. It kind of reminds me of The Wizard Of Oz. Which then makes me want to go see Wicked again. Which makes me wonder… when is Wicked coming back to the Fabulous Fox!? Okay, just fair warning, I’m feeling the urge to go sing Defying Gravity really loudly in the shower now… 😛
I thought of the Wizard of Oz too.
Did the yellow brick road give it away?!
🙂
Me too! The top of the bin reminded me of the Tinman’s hat
Oh, yeah!
I can see that, too, S.E.!
🙂
Hmm… it’s been a while since I’ve seen the Wizard of Oz. And I’ve never seen Wicked… which probably works out to your advantage, Annabelle (because you wouldn’t want to hear me singing Defying Gravity… or anything else, for that matter… yikes)!
🙂
Better not be any scary flying monkeys in there 😦
Aren’t flying monkeys supposed to be good luck, though?
Hmm… maybe not.
🙂
Hold the phone… the Fabulous Fox… you do mean Atlanta, right? Did you see Wicked at the Fox while visiting? You guys don’t live in GA, do you? If you return to GA – have dinner at the Vortex first. Excellent burgers – veggie and non-veggie.
I didn’t know there was a Fox in Atlanta, too!
The one Annabelle is referring to is in St. Louis… it’s a bit of a landmark here… which means I really should get a photo or two someday, doesn’t it?
Now I want a burger even more than before! *om nom nom*
🙂
One of my best friends (and the girl who helped Bob and I meet) lives in Atlanta now! I haven’t been since I was a kid but I want to go again one of these days. Here’s our Fox! http://www.fabulousfox.com/
It’s a pretty foxy place, isn’t it, Annabelle?!
🙂
This means you’ll be coming to my house next weekend to do portraits of my cats, right?
I’ll check with Dharma…
she might have made other plans. I’m afraid… I’m very afraid!
🙂
i was nowhere near it, way out in fact! thought it was some kind of lubricant container to do with machineries.
looking forward to the next one. 🙂
That’s related, though, C.O.R…
lots of that sort of equipment on a farm, too!
I’m very happy to hear that!
🙂
Yeah I guessed completely wrong, I need more practice. Excellent image and I too can’t wait for the next one
Thank you very much, Astra…
I thought this was kind of fun… I will have to try it again sometime!
🙂
It reminds me of home. I grew up in Oklahoma.
It reminds me of home, too… (I actually took this up in North Dakota only a few miles from where I grew up)!
I have a few relatives in Oklahoma.
🙂
Missed the Friday post, but love the photo none-the-less. 🙂
Whoa! I DID see it! Hahaha. . . That’s how much you had me fooled. 🙂
By the way, I gave you the Liebster Blog Award, so hop over to my blog to read about it and pick it up. You certainly deserve it. Congratulations! 🙂
I found you via Cecelia. Loved the conversation with your cat!
Meow!
Well thank you very much for stopping by! I really appreciate that – and your kind comment as well!
Dharma says to say hello!
🙂
It was an extreme close up, so unless you live or have lived around grain bins I think it would be pretty tough to guess!
Oh, man… this could go to my head in a hurry! Wait a minute, this isn’t one of those things where I have to send $300.00 to someplace I’ve never heard of before, is it? Seriously, though, thank you very, very much Ms. F!
🙂
oh it’s lovely…. I liked it before but now I like it even more now that I can see what it is
Thank you very much, N.M.!
I used to go by this grain bin all the time and FINALLY managed to get a few photos… I’d still like to take a few more under different conditions, though!
🙂
AH! I would never have guest it. Well done!
Yeah, there really weren’t too many clues with this one… it wasn’t even fair, really!
Thank you very much, sir!
🙂
Me don’t know grain bins… 😦 I wouldn’t have guessed that in a million years. Even now…I would guess, ‘fallout shelter’.
Why did you decide to reverse the image?
Duck and cover! Duck and cover!
I was trying to replicate a wet plate positive / ambrotype in this one, M.P. – that’s why the image is reversed (I was wondering if anyone would notice that!).
I really, really want to do this for realsies A.S.A.P., though. This faking collodion just isn’t cutting it… the real things are just to incredible. I’ve decided it’s going to happen… it’s only a matter of time. 🙂
i had no clue, so i didn’t try to guess. we don’t have many of those where i live so i’m giving myself a pass! great shot.
Absolutely, U.M…
I wouldn’t guess there are many Grain Bins in N.Y.C.! But that’s only fair… you’ve got too much amazing subject matter the way it is. Combine that with your talent and it’s almost depressing for me! 🙂
That’d be a fun little building to have. Install some windows for a cross-breeze and it’d be a cool fort/man cave.
I like the melty edges of the photo too.
I’ve seen some photos of grain bins that people have turned into homes / etc… they actually looked pretty cool!
Thank you very much! I really appreciate that!
🙂
I would have never guessed. Grain, I’m off for a healthy bowl of it topped with 2% milk.
Deb xx
Sounds delicious! Have a wonderful meal (and day), Ms. A!
🙂
Previous picture, from Friday, was a part of this one 😉
Absolutely… I was having a bit of fun with that!
🙂
fun, and a bit of good work 🙂
I appreciate that very much – thank you!
🙂
What’s going on in the corners of the photos? It looks so liquidy!
I was trying to replicate an old wet plate photograph with this one, U.M… so that’s why things look a bit… um… runny.
I’m really, really hoping to be able to make some real ambrotypes some day (with a late 1800’s era lens – maybe something with a bit of a swirly bokeh). So… you know… if you’ve got one that you’re looking to throw out… please keep me in mind.
🙂
Come on I was close. It could have been Alfred’s number plate!!!
To the Bat Bin!
🙂
The eye of the corn!
🙂
Cool final picture, SIG. I didn’t read all the comments, so my apologies if you’ve already addressed this… I notice the words are backwards in this shot, but I didn’t think the words were backwards in the ‘guess what it is’ shot.
In today’s post I’m trying to replicate the look of a wet plate (ambrotype), which is why I mirrored the image. Friday’s post was meant to replicate a different alternative process.
Great eye, Ms. D!
🙂
Nails are a kind of grain. . .
Neat little building. It’d make a nice mad scientist labrotory.
Hahaha… they’re probably both a fairly good source of Iron.
I’ve seen some people convert grain bins into some pretty neat living spaces, Binky… kinda cool.
🙂
Now I feel all ignorant – I *never* would have guessed grain thingy!
I didn’t expect anyone to get this one, Megan… it was very cryptic. Although, I thought there might be a slight chance it would be recognized by someone who Would Plow 500 Miles…
🙂
I knew it all along, I just didn’t want to appear too clever… and believe it or not, that excuse sometimes works… 😉
Hahaha… actually, I really do believe you, F.S… still, please don’t over-use that technique now, though (I’d only fall for it 99 out of 100 times)!
🙂
1. i’ve been absent for a hot minute.
2. but i grew up on a farm so i want you to know i would have guessed it.
3. so, booya
1.welcome back, B.D!
2.i don’t doubt that for a hot minute!
3.touche (also, I believe this is the first booya anyone has dropped on me in some time… I was totally unprepared for this contingency)!
🙂
well my guess was something that held ammunition because i thought it looked like a wooden box . now that i know what it is can i have another guess? “-)
Sure. I don’t see why not, Lynn.
And this it is a container, just one that holds something else, so you weren’t that far off, really!
🙂
I would never have guessed what it is 🙂 I love the cat photo a few posts back!!!
Mary
I think I probably should have included a few more clues… it was pretty vague, really!
Thank you very much, Mary… I’ll be sure to pass that along to Dharma. 🙂
Well, I guess I was sort of close. I mean, I guessed “beef” and beef eat grain, right?
I love the edges…like it was caught in a fire.
Totally, YAW – same agricultural ballpark if you ask me!
I was trying to replicate an old photographic wet plate method here… I’m very happy to hear you liked the results!
🙂
How did I miss grain bin?
Shucks.
Literally.
Hee hee
nice tin architecture to sleep in …
It might have been too full of junk to do so at the time (so I airbrushed that out).
🙂
See??? That’s what i mean by “working great with textures”, Sir!!! Amazing job!!
I guess I was fairly happy with this one…
I figure if I make enough of them sooner or later one is bound to work a bit better than the rest!
Thank you very much for your kind comment, sir!
🙂
Awww… cheeky monkey was surprised to see her name mentioned! And she also loves this photo! 🙂
How could I not mention you?! You totally knew what I was up to!
Thank you so much – that is very nice to hear, Juana!
🙂
