Great Horned Owl

It’s not just Jake. I get this look a lot. Reminds me of a guy at the DMV, hoo too.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

  1. Wonderful shot. It is one of those ” does not suffer fools gladly” expressions. If it comes from a spouse, you are in trouble ( not that that ever happened to me of course).

  2. I think he’s beautiful. I too have heard an owl (once or twice) in the woods behind my house, and wish I could’ve actually seen it. Meanwhile, my dove makes owl-like sounds all day – Hooohoooo, Hoohooooo.

  3. I really like this photo! Where I live, the owl is the town mascot. Keep in mind that this is in Europe and not here in the US, where every school has a mascot. Not the same thing.

  4. This is one of my favourite photographs so far
SIG I really do like these owls, indeed there are
some barn owls just across from where I write
and…Yes nocturnal hoots are very nice to hear

Have a fine rest of day / evening SIG

    • Oh, wow! That’s wonderful to hear, A.G.! Thank you!
I don’t know if I would have guessed that! To tell you the truth, I wasn’t too sure about this one… but I thought that look on his face was fun enough to share, anyway.
      Thanks again, A.G.!
I hope you have a wonderful day, too!
      🙂

      • You’re right about the look on his face,
and you have captured him extremely
well SIG, but how long did you have to
wait to get the perfect photograph? 🙂

        Excellent work…

        • Hahaha… well, I guess I might have stretched the truth about how long I had to wait (although it was a few minutes at least). Felt a bit longer, though, because it was a bit chilly in the wind that day!
          Thanks so much, A.G.!
I sincerely appreciate that – I hope you are having a wonderful weekend!
          🙂

  5. Yep, everyone it’s that time of year again, Robert is one year wiser today! HAPPY BIRTHDAY SPILLEDINKGUY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE YOU!!!

    • Hahaha… he doesn’t really look like he’s inviting a closer look, does he? I guess I’m giving him a bit of a bad time, though… in person he seemed a little less intimidating (I think the high angle really exaggerated those furrowed lids…)
      Thanks so much, Ms. K!
      🙂

  6. cool shot!
answering the question you left on my blog about the iphone–i don’t see why you couldn’t pick one up on ebay or something. without the service or the ability to get on the 3G network you’d just need to connect to a wireless network to download the apps (if you want to use apps) and then start snapping. go for it 🙂

    • Thanks, U.M.!
That sounds great… I think it would really help me improve my street photography because I wouldn’t feel quite as self-conscious as I do when I’ve got the DSLR out, people would probably be less bothered by it, I’d hopefully always have it with me etc… so… I might just have to look into that. Now… if I could just borrow a few of your skills…
      🙂

    • Thanks so much, Diva!
I thought the grays complimented the images a bit more… which is cool!
A bit of both, actually! It’s a pretty big lens, but we were at the World Bird Sanctuary when I took this (so I was able to get really close, too)!
      🙂

  7. I adore owls. We have had a couple of these over the years. I nurse them back to health and turn them loose. They never go too far.
    Red.

    • That sounds fascinating, Red!
I’ve never been that close to one… the wildlife sanctuary where I took this photo is the closest I’ve ever come to an owl… it was a lot of fun!
      🙂

      • They are simply amazing. They are as predatory as hawks and falcons, but smarter than both. They can be very tolerant whilst you tend them, but once in the pink, they go back to being predators. We had a momma barn owl and a female screech owl nest in the barns. They are great because they keep down the rodents and the snakes. Most people consider that a double bonus 😉
        Red.
