This weekend I constructed a makeshift softbox of sorts. How exciting, right?! Anyway, 1 cardboard box + white tissue paper + lots and lots of masking tape = some sweet, sweet diffused lighting. Ah, the fun you can have (and just in time for this weeks WordPress Photo Challenge, ‘One’). Does anyone else have a U2 song stuck in their head? You know, something completely incompatible with this image? Maybe it’s just me.
“Is it too late…
Tonight…
To drag the past out into the light…”
U2 – One
About this image: digital photograph – lightly modified
Very cool! It’s all drillish! And lighty! A+ Sir! 🙂
Hahaha… Thank you, Annabelle! It’s ‘a’ something, right?! 🙂
This makes me want to wield a power tool
I was waiting for a comment like that..ha
Ha – me, too! 🙂
Ahhh, yes…
reminds me of my high school shop classes.
And several ‘incidents’ in said classes…
🙂
Where’s the “likes” button on this comment?
It must be off chillaxin’ somewhere…
🙂
LOL… I don’t know about a U2 song, the first thing that came to my mind was the old classic horror movie “Driller Killer”, but then I guess that explains more about me than people really need to know… 😉
Real cool softbox shot though.. They sure are great to mess with, and I made one too a year or so back, but unfortunately the cardboard / tissue paper construction proved to be less than durable…
I’ve never seen “Driller Killer”, but there’s a scene in the movie “Pi” that comes to mind!
Thank you very much, FS – yeah, my softbox is beyond fragile, too (some day I need to use that drill to build myself a nice wood frame – then I could use some eye hooks at the top to ‘suspend’ objects, too…”
🙂
I have to make one of these light boxes. Nat (of Book Line & Sinker fame) did a post a while back on how to build one easily. I will have to go consult and get cracking. Once the laundry is caught up, and the dishes, and I get some recipes done, and respond to an inbox of email, and comments, and … YEP.
LOVE your pic!!
They are a lot of fun! Although, if you have the time, I’d suggest building a wood frame. The cardboard box thing is pretty flimsy. Maybe you could salvage some material from your old deck?
I hear you, Dishy… to-do lists only seem to get longer, don’t they?! 🙂
I love the border. Really makes everything pop out.
It seemed… effective.
At the time, anyway.
🙂
Thank you for keeping the temple of your victim off to the left and out of the frame… 😉
Hahaha… I do what I can, M.P. –
craziness, but craziness in moderation! 🙂
Interesting that you have a drill photo. It was only on Friday we were at my Father-in-law’s & he had an old hand drill & I was thinking how you rarely see them anymore. Sometimes the old ways are just better…
This one is a hand drill that belonged to my grandfather (from the photo below). I’ve been meaning to photograph it for a while now, and the softbox was a perfect excuse!
🙂
Nice. I built a light box a couple of months ago and have hardly used it…I am thinking now would be a good time to ‘fiddle’ with it some. Stay tuned. 😉
Sweet!
I’m really looking forward to seeing your photos, Mr. J – but then I always do! 🙂
Soft box? I’d not heard of this before. My thoughts ran to ‘drill as weapon’ too, specifically an old Brian de Palma film, the name of which escapes me.
Looks like the poster for a horror movie…about DIY projects!
i love the way your mind works too…
It’s like a mouse on a wheel.
A very slow mouse.
And a very squeaky wheel.
🙂
Ha!
I’ve stared in a few of those.
I’m hoping there won’t be another sequel for a while now.
🙂
I’ve got a few creepy tools I’ll be posting at some point…
this one seems like it can go a few ways…
🙂
no song in mind but I find your lighting quite sexy. 🙂
Thank you very much, Lynn –
I the lights are blushing.
🙂
So is that a 4inch drill bit?
Hmm, could be the movie poster for SAW XVII
Four inch? Looks more like a quarter inch bit.
I hope this isn’t one of those prissy, fashion model drills that thinks it’s better than all the regular working-class drills.
A “quarter inch”, how sad. No wonder its a hand drill 😦 !
I can scale one up if you’d prefer to check out a larger format, F.L.
🙂
It only eats salads.
With coffee and cigarettes.
It seems to roll it’s eyes a lot, too.
🙂
Hahaha…
I think it might be metric. The conversion always throws me off. 🙂
G-r-r-r-eat capture!!!!
simple and powerful 🙂
Thank you so very much, Marina!
I appreciate that very much, and thank you for stopping by, too! 🙂
what is it about the combo of a man and drill….grins
its bang on fridge…way too cool….
and yep…am ready with mine to be posted…
Hahaha…
it’s a special, special bond, Sonny.
I’m looking forward to checking out your piece! 🙂
so manly right now.
not me, you.
and i love U2. always and forever.
Hahaha!
Glad to see my feminine side is still shining through.
Rock on, B.D.!
🙂
Somehow my mind inverted ‘not me, you’ into ‘not you, me’. Reading. It’s hard. 🙂
I love the richness of tonality of the drill and the clean white background! Great rendition!
Thank you so much, sir!
I often get a bit carried away with my editing, so sometimes it’s nice to have a try at a nice, clean image. 🙂
hahahah I’ve been singing the song “ONE” in my head since this this challenge started.
Great shot by the way!
Here comes my “ONE” challenge: http://suvesabun.wordpress.com/2011/04/26/the-last-one-in-the-box-weekly-photo-challenge-one/
Hope you like it 🙂
*whew*
Relieved I’m not the only one!
Thank you very much for the kind words – and for stopping by!
I’m looking forward to checking out your submission as well! 🙂
so nifty! i made one of those boxes myself a while back. sadly, my hubby put his foot through the tissue paper side and it’s now been relegated to the basement until i repair it. love that pic–is it a hand drill? (my tool knowledge is sketchy at best.)
It’s only a matter of time before mine’s headed for the shop, too – I wish it was a bit more durable.
It is indeed a hand drill. From what I’ve been told. I’m kinda’ in the same boat, Nat! 🙂
I’m late for the party, but I’m here!! Unless you’re a photographer, no one would have a clue as to how difficult it is to achieve this kind of shot!! Fabulous!!
Thank you so much, J.G. –
could be better, but all-in-all I think I got a bit lucky on this one! 🙂
