Friday is Mark Twain’s birthday so posting one of my author drawings seemed appropriate-ish (Poe here and Alcott here). I’ve been transferring these drawings into 3-D / Mixed Media pieces (about 95% complete) which I hope to finish in a decade or so. If I’m lucky.
Mark Twain: “Are you ever gonna finish one of these confounded ‘projects?’ I swear, son… you are slower than molasses on a winter’s morn’!”
Me: “Mole… asses?!” *giggle*
Mark Twain: *sigh* “I do declare… that boy may be a bit dull, but at least he’s plain-spoken!”
About this image: charcoal drawing on Bristol Board
That’s an amazing drawing, Robert, and I would never call you dull. 🙂
Thank you so much, S.E!
Hahaha… well… you know…
🙂
You have a superb talent my great friend and
this portrait of Mark Twain is absolutely awesome.
Your creativity knows no boundaries SIG and this
is what makes your Space so wickedly unique 🙂
Have a wonderful Thursday SIG 🙂
Androgoth
Thank you so much, Andro! I’m very happy to hear you liked this one! I just hope I can finish the 3-D pieces at some point… I transfered them onto / over some handwritten text from books they wrote… and built a kind of framework that holds a book off to the side (all that’s left is putting something on those covers… just trying to narrow down my ideas on what to do about that).
Thank you again, A.G… I hope this week has been treating you well!
🙂
That is a bloody brilliant drawing!
What a kind thing to say!
Thank you so very much!
🙂
LOL, that sounds like an Aussie response 🙂
Australians?! Really?! Where?!
😉
Wow. And I mean that in the best way.
I sincerely appreciate that, H.C!
Thank you so very much!
🙂
Adding to Hippie’s “wow” and raising by two more “wow”s. I love this picture.
Thank you very, very much, Peg! You are always so incredibly kind!
🙂
Looks awesome…but you better finish it before he dies.
HA!
Didn’t he say something to the effect of, “The rumors of my death are greatly exaggerated.”?
Of course… that was a few years ago…
Many thanks, Bearman!
🙂
That is a stunning representation of Twain. I can actually hear that conversation … heheheh, you both crack me up.
Thank you so much, Ms. G!
Hahaha… I’m glad someone else is cracking up, too (it can get a bit embarrassing when it’s just me cracking myself up, you know)!
🙂
Awesome! One either loves Mark Twain or loves Mark Twain, eh? The other two are terrific as well, and the dialog is something all three would not understand but would surely appreciate, lol.
Hahaha… yes… the dialog around here can take some getting used-to!I have to keep everyone on their toes, you know (at least that’s the excuse I’m going with at the moment)!
🙂
Oh, SIG! You’ve outdone yourself! His eyes are so expressive.
Twain has so many great quotes. One of my favorite: “There are lies, damn lies, and statistics.” 🙂
I’m so happy to hear you liked this, Ms. C! And thank you!
Hahaha… indeed! He almost has too many great quotes! I was going to use something he actually said here, but I just couldn’t decide!
🙂
Very nice. Twain is one of my heroes. And for a guy who took 7 years to write Huck Finn, he probably shouldn’t be so critical of procrastination…
I thank you, sir!
I didn’t realize he spent so long on Huck Finn… so, I guess I’ve still got a few years before I start to panic…
🙂
I love the picture. Old Sam is one of my favorite people and probably shaped my personality as much as anyone. (No I never knew him personally…we lived in different parts of the country) but I have read and re-read his stuff since I was a small boy…and yes he was already published when I was a small boy. I would love to have a copy of this hangin’ over my desk. Your talent is always a joy to me.
Are you sure? I would have sworn he mentioned you a time or two. 😉
Maybe he felt like he knew me. I think we were friends on Facebook.
Hahaha…
he must have ignored my request!
🙂
You know… you both have such a warmth in your humor… I can absolutely see that, Bo!
I was re-reading some of his stuff while I was working on these (I used some text for a background in the 3-D thing)… I hadn’t done so in a while, and I was kind of surprised by how much it bowled me over. You know, that Twain guy wasn’t too shabby, was he?!
Thank you so very much for your generous words, Bo… your great kindness is always a joy to me, sir!
🙂
That’s stunning. What size is it?
Thank you so much!
This one is a drawn on (and a bit under) 14×17-ish… I cropped off a bit of the length here and added some more space to the sides (and pumped up the blacks a bit… full disclosure).
🙂
This is truly exceptional, Robert. I have seen a lot of drawings from his portraits, but this is at the top. I would love to see the 3D pieces.
Thank you so very much, Red!
They are nearly complete. I transferred the drawings onto a bit of hand-written text from various things they wrote… and built a little frame-work that mounts a book next to the portrait (I’ve just got to narrow down my thoughts on what to mount on the covers of the books).
🙂
Do not poll me. I would just muddle the works with a plethora of choices 😉
Hahaha,,, NO! You sound like me, Red… TOO MANY ideas!!!
🙂
Amazing,SIG!!! Truly. I didn’t know you drew…did I know that? It looks so life-like, real, like he could come out of the page. You are really talented artist. Nice dialog there, too! 🙂
It’s been quite a while since I posted a drawing here, B.F… so maybe not. I guess that means I should try get a few more drawings finished at some point, huh? The thing is that the silly painting I’m currently working on is taking f-o-r-e-v-e-r!
You are so kind, B.F! Thank you very, very much!
🙂
That is so awesome, the life in that, and amazing. Cheers.
That is incredibly kind of you to say!
Thank you so very much!
🙂
You have big talent Mr. SIG 🙂
And you have incredible kindness, Ms. B… thank you!
🙂
very nice drawing! so soft! and great idea! i se we like some of the same authors 🙂
That is so very kind of you to say! Thank you!
I’m very happy to hear that!
🙂
Your talent is beyond words to describe how excellent this is, Sig!…This is fantastic!
And you say it’s in progress?…Whoa!!
Have a great evening. 🙂
You are far too kind, Deb, thank you very much!
Well… the drawing is done, but the 3-D piece is still… not… done. Not that I’m s-l-o-w or anything, but… 😉
Love!
I’m so very happy to hear that, M.M!
Thank you very, very much!
🙂
Incredible artwork Robert. At 1st I was pondering drawing or photo. Hard to tell the difference. You are the Artmeister!!!
You are far too kind, Mr. M… thank you!
Well, I don’t know about that… they always look a bit better small scale, though.
And I did pump up the blacks a bit in PS, too… if I’m being honest.
🙂
I thought it looked very familiar. At my last job we had a customer who is the spitting image of Mr Twain in this drawing.
That’s kind of cool, Mr. M!
Well… I mean… I think it would be.
Might be a bit strange in an eerie sort of way, too, I guess!
🙂
Those eyes, they keep following me…. Seriously SIG, I think he knows I stole the cookies 🙂
Hahaha…
Never fear, Loon… I’ll distract him with more bad jokes!
🙂
How cool he is. He must have experienced a lot and have great history.
Thank you so much, sir!
What a remarkable life, indeed!
🙂
That is an absolutely incredible drawing! It’s more real that reality. I know it’s a drawing, but it’s hard to believe.
Thank you so very much for your great kindness, sir!
Well… they do always look better small-scale.
And just between you, me and the web I did pump up the blacks a bit on this one.
🙂
Nevertheless, it’s still an amazing piece.
Thank you very much, Binky.
That means a lot… because I very much respect your eye.
🙂
Well, you are brilliant with a bit of charcoal.
Thank you so very, very much!
I sincerely appreciate that!
🙂
That drawing is amazing, SIG. His eyes are looking straight into mine. 😀
Thank you, Nancy…
very, very much!
I tried that ‘follow my finger’ trick, but he just refused to play along.
🙂
Creepy Comment Alert: I’ve always had a little crush on Mr. Twain.
I think the reference photo just started blushing, Ms. N
(particularly impressive for a B/W)!
🙂
Good luck to you and I’m looking so forward to seeing the final result! ;D
Thank you so much, Cristina!
I have a few things in mind…
I just need to make a decision, already!
🙂
I know you’ve had a lot of comments, but gotta tell you, when I saw this, I did a double take. It’s extraordinarily powerful.
Thank you so much, Ms. S!
I appreciate every comment very much… especially when they are so incredibly kind!
🙂
Wow. Wow.
Many thanks, Ms. D!
I sincerely appreciate your sharing this silly thing!!!
🙂
I think ol’ Sam Clemens would have appreciated the molasses joke. This is beautiful, Sig, and I love how you captured the eyes. Stunning work.
I almost always start refining the eyes first…
not sure why…
I think it’s just kind of natural to be drawn there.
That and his Ice Cream T-Shirt collection was a bit lacking.
this is incredible, SIG. a work in progress? well, as the artist, i guess you have the right to say so. however the way i see it, this is already brilliant just the way it is.
&nsp;
seeing his name, i am reminded of some of my favourite childhood reads – Tom Sawyer, and the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn….
this is one cool post. thank you for sharing!
urk – typing too fast. just ahead of ‘seeing his name’, after the ampersand that should have been nbsp; the ‘b’ is missing…… oh well. c’est la vie. am sure Mark Twain could have come up with a quip for that. 🙂
I never would have noticed, P&K…
(as you can probably tell by what I usually ‘write’)!
🙂
I’m so happy to hear you liked this, P&K, thank you very much!
I think the drawing might be done… but the 3-D / mixed media piece is about 95% complete… just down to a few decisions… and details.
🙂
I am just calling back in to have another look at this one SIG, the detail that you have presented in this drawing is second to none my great friend and certainly deserves all of these fine observations. Kepp up the most excellent work and enjoy the rest of your weekend 🙂
Androgoth
Thank you so very much, A.G!
I think I would like to do another drawing fairly soon…
if I every finish the painting I’m currently working on and/or narrow-down my ever expanding list of subject matter, anyway!
Thanks again, Andro! I hope you had a wonderful weekend my friend!
🙂
Oh my gosh! Did you draw this? WoW…you are very talented! *jealous*
That is ridiculously kind of you to say, Tina!
Thank you so very much!
Oh… it’s just a technical skill, really. Considering the literally thousands of hours I’ve spent on things like this I should be much better by now!
🙂
oh I wish I was half as good as you! Don’t be modest! Just accept you are good at this! lol (easier said than done I know)
Well… I do very much appreciate your kindness, Tina.
That I’m more than happy to admit!
🙂
I love the way that Twain’s hair blends into the background board and the sparkle of his eyes. Excellent work Bob 🙂
I’m very happy to hear you say that, Martin… because it was kind of a tricky situation… trying to decide how much lost & found with the hair.
Thank you so very much!
🙂
That’s absolutely unbelievable! Great talent!
Thank you so much, Mr. H!
That is very, very kind of you to say!
🙂
Man, I wish I had your drawing talent… simply amazing
I know you do, Nigel…
it’s just a matter of being lucky enough to find time.
🙂
Seriously impressed with your talented masterpiece here SiG ie I always knew you were talented but you keep blowing me out of the water!
You are far too kind, Ms. K…
thank you so very much!
I’d like to do another drawing sooner than later… if I ever finish the painting I’ve been working on f-o-r-e-v-e-r, anyway!
🙂
Hi Inky…I love the trees in the posts below…trees are such interesting subjects. Wow! Your drawing of Twain is wonderful…I’m very impressed!!! I just finished “Gone Girl” which takes around around Hannibal and the St. Louis area. The books makes several references to Mark Twain.
Hi Mary!
Agreed! I think my favorite part about taking these was the fog… it completely obstructed all the normal background ‘stuff’… so it really focused attention on the trees… pretty lucky!
Interesting… I’ve not heard of ‘Gone Girl’… but it sounds very interesting… especially since I’ve lived around STL for quite a few years now… I wonder how many places I would recognize?!
Thank you very much, Mary!
🙂
I don’t know what to day. . . Twain stepping right out of paper. beautiful work.
You are always so incredibly kind, S.F!
Thank you very, very much!
🙂
Inky, this is truly one of the most stunning drawings I’ve ever seen. The level of realism is incredible. Cannot believe your talent; it’s truly exceptional.
You are always ridiculously kind to me, Dishy!
Thank you so very, very much!

🙂
Whoa.
Amazing.
Makes me actual want to read his books…
*actually*
I never would have even noticed!
🙂
I’m so very happy to hear you liked it! Thank you very much, T.F!
You are incredibly kind to say that!
🙂
wow (wish I could be more descriptive, but that just about sums it up!)
I’ll sure take that!
It’s very, very kind of you to say!
And I sincerely appreciate it!
🙂
That is so amazing. I can’t even handle you just create that. QUITE envious.
That’s incredibly kind of you to say, Megan…
it just takes a bit of time…
🙂
Looking good! Another decade…you’d better get busy!
Many thanks, Patti!
Hahaha… indeed! Tick-tock!
🙂
Dropping by via Ashley (S.E.), after all, looking a bit here and a bit there, after deciding – despite my almost notorious laziness not only when it comes to commenting – to leave at least a short com(pli)ment, the question was not ‘Where?’. It was this very drawing which draw me here, again. Chapeau!
S.E. is an incredibly talented lady, isn’t she?! That’s a very nice way to be found! Speaking of which, thank you so much for stopping by! And for your incredibly kind comment as well!
🙂
And thank you for YOUR incredibly kind comment,Robert. 😀
Don’t mention it, S.E!
🙂
I heard your family really liked Christmas…
That’s what the flashlights say, anyway.
🙂
